"Three…friggin…hours." Allen muttered. He shifted his pack to try and prevent whatever it was that was stabbing him in the back from digging into his back. He swore as the movement did little to alleviate the pain. He sighed, and returned to looking at nothing. They had been waiting for these mysterious objects to fall for three hours now. This was not what he had joined the army for. He had expected to go globetrotting, fighting for his country, not standing in Iowa, preventing idiotic civvies from getting crushed by falling objects that weren't falling. He glanced over at Goz, who was trying to get through to headquarters to find out what was going on, but all the random radio crap had prevented any and all radio signals. Hell, he didn't even have cell phone reception. Suddenly, something peculiar caught Allen's attention. The ground was starting to be covered in fall leaves, creating a thin carpet of red, orange, and yellow. Well, some of the leaves started moving around. That wouldn't have been strange at all, except that there was no breeze. As he watched, more and more leaves began shifting. Allen glanced around, and saw that pretty much everyone had noticed as well. A loud rustling drew his attention back to the ground. What he saw made his mouth drop open in shock.
The leaves weren't just moving around without a wind, they were now levitating several inches off the ground, and gaining altitude. Allen then noticed that his pack was significantly lighter, and he felt all the hairs on his body rising. He suddenly heard several other soldiers retching, before finding himself joining them. It felt as if everything he had eaten for breakfast was climbing back out. He fought to keep it down, but that was a losing battle. He fell to his hands and knees, along with almost everyone else. Right as he felt he could hold it no longer, it all stopped. He gasped as his breakfast slid back down, and then grunted in pain as his pack slammed down on his back. As he stood back up, he was showered with leaves falling back to earth. While most everything had returned to normal, the hairs on his arms and back of his neck stayed up. What in god's name could bring almost 5,000 armed soldiers to their knees and make things levitate? Despite the order not to, Allen switched his rifle off of safe. There was no way he was going to get caught unprepared for whatever might happen next.
The silence was broken by a startled cry from some soldier down the line. Allen quickly glanced around to see what the cause of the alarm was. He saw that every soldier was staring and pointing straight up, so he joined them, and for the second time, felt his jaw drop. Descending from the sky at a seemingly leisurely pace were hundreds of vaguely triangle shaped objects, point down. He had never been too good at math, so he had no idea how to describe the shape of the objects. They looked like a bunch of triangles that had been connected to make a pyramid shape. Spiraling slowly down, the objects suddenly began to open. The triangles peeled away, revealing a glossy black egg shape within. Some of the larger pyramids stayed closed, and flipped around before landing softly on the ground, looking like giant metal Christmas trees. The floating ones formed circles around the larger ones, facing outwards towards the soldiers that surrounded it. One of the giant triangles was only about fifty yards from him, and it began peeling open as well. It slowly revealed what appeared to be a full sized building, also made of some glossy black material. Allen stared at it, mesmerized by its strangeness. There appeared to be no door on the building, or windows for that matter. No sooner had he thought this, when a bright blue, shimmery field appeared on the front.
Out of it walked a group of beings. Allen was frozen in place. Here he was being approached by what could only be aliens from outer space, when only moments before he had been cursing the fact that he was there at all. They wore armored suits built of the same shiny black material that their building and ships were made of. Gold visors hid their faces, but he noticed that they had tails, were only about five and a half feet tall, and that their legs bent backwards. The one in the middle had very subtly red designs inscribed on his suit, and appeared to be unarmed. However, the five others carried what were obviously alien firearms. Upon seeing the weapons, Allen readied his own, and widened his stance. The aliens stopped about six steps away from him and stood perfectly still, their mirrored gold visors showing Allen his own face, which looked far more scared than he felt. The leader raised both its hands and spoke something. To Allen, it sounded kinda like Italian, but not entirely. Perhaps seeing that Allen did not understand, the alien looked at its cohorts, nodded, and then returned its gaze to Allen. It reached into a pouch on its hip, and started to pull something out. The object was shaped like a sphere that had the top third chopped off, and replaced with little spires. The alien held it towards Allen, and the sphere started to glow bright blue, and the tingling lifting feeling returned to Allen. He also felt something almost…pushing in his mind, like it was trying to make room. Feeling his training kick in, he took a step back, got into a combat stance and raised his rifle, sighting in on the red detailed alien. He heard Goz yelling to him in the background, sounding like he was yelling from far away, but Allen had made up his mind. Feeling like he was moving in slow motion, he pulled the trigger and sent a burst of 5.56 ammunition into the chest of the lead alien, causing it to spin around and fall to the ground, and then Allen began to switch targets to one of the other aliens, when all feeling, thought, everything disappeared.
